Three Confirmed Dead in Lillooet Mudslide; One Person Still Missing

Authorities have confirmed that the bodies of three men have been recovered following a devastating mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia. According to the RCMP, one person remains missing as recovery operations continue in the wake of this week’s extreme weather.

B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe stated that one body was recovered on Wednesday and two more were found on Thursday. In a Saturday update, Lapointe noted that search teams were unable to locate the fourth missing person during continued efforts on Friday.

The first victim of the disaster was identified earlier in the week, when a woman’s body was discovered on Monday. The mudslide, which was caused by unprecedented rainfall, is part of a larger pattern of flooding and landslides that have impacted southern B.C.

Lapointe confirmed that while active search efforts have now ended, officials are still assessing the situation and considering further actions to locate the final missing individual.

The RCMP has confirmed that the bodies of three men have been recovered following a catastrophic mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia. One person is still missing. The incident occurred on November 15 along Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake Road, after intense rainfall caused massive flooding and landslides throughout the area.

Initially, four individuals were reported missing in the aftermath of the slide. According to B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe, one victim was found on Wednesday, followed by two more on Thursday. The first known casualty—a woman—was discovered on Monday, bringing the confirmed death toll to four.

Rescue and law enforcement teams have worked relentlessly at the site, but efforts have been hampered by dangerous ground conditions and ongoing bad weather, said RCMP Staff Sergeant Janelle Shoihet.

Highway 99 remains closed in the affected area, and there is currently no estimated timeframe for its reopening.

Lapointe expressed condolences to those affected: “On behalf of the BC Coroners Service, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the families who have experienced such sudden and tragic loss. Our thoughts are also with the loved ones of the individual who is still missing.”

She also noted the broader difficulties facing the province: “This year has brought immense hardship for many across British Columbia. Our focus is on understanding the causes of these tragic events and helping to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Although the active search phase has ended, officials continue to monitor the situation and are considering further steps to locate the last missing person.
